Feeling Stuck? How to Start Making Small, Lasting Changes

Simple steps to help you start small, stay consistent, and create lasting change — with support when you need it.

Feeling Stuck? How to Start Making Small, Lasting Changes

We all have moments where we feel stuck, like we want to move forward, but something keeps us in place. Maybe you’ve tried to start a new habit, shift your mindset, or nourish yourself better, but it just hasn’t clicked.

The good news? You don’t need to transform everything overnight. Small steps add up to real change.

Let’s look at how to take that first step and keep going.

1️⃣ Get Clear on Why You Want to Change

Lasting change starts from within. Before you decide what to change, take a moment to reflect on why.

Ask yourself: What would feel different in my life if I made this change?

Tip: Write it down on a sticky note, in your phone, or in a journal — and keep it where you can see it. This “why” will guide you on tough days.

2️⃣ Choose One Tiny Action

Trying to change everything at once can feel overwhelming. Instead, choose one small, realistic action that fits into your life.

Examples:

  • Add a glass of water before your coffee
  • Take 3 deep breaths before each meal
  • Stretch for 2 minutes when you wake up

Tiny, consistent wins build confidence and momentum.

3️⃣ Pair It With Something You Already Do

This is called habit stacking, and it’s powerful!

Link your new action to something that’s already part of your routine:

  • While waiting for the kettle to boil → do a gentle neck roll
  • Before brushing your teeth → repeat a positive mantra

This helps your new habit feel natural.

4️⃣ Be Kind to Yourself Along the Way

Perfection isn’t the goal, progress is.

There will be days when things don’t go as planned. That’s okay.

If you skip a day, just start again. Every moment is a chance to choose differently.

5️⃣ Celebrate Every Little Win

Noticing and honouring your small successes helps them stick.

Ideas:

  • Smile at yourself in the mirror
  • Write down your progress
  • Share it with someone who supports you

6️⃣ Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Support

Making changes on your own isn’t always easy, even the small ones.

It’s normal to feel motivated at first, then slip back into old patterns.

That’s where working with a coach or accountability partner can make all the difference.

A health coach helps you:

  • Get clear on your goals
  • Stay on track
  • Adjust your plan when life gets busy
  • Feel encouraged and supported every step of the way

You don’t have to do it all alone.

Final Thought

You don’t have to feel stuck forever.

The smallest step forward is still progress, and you don’t have to take that step alone.

Reconnect with your inner strengths and sense of balance, with the support you need, one mindful choice at a time.
